CONSUMER GROUP URGES LTFRB TO STOP MEDDLING IN THE UBER AND GRAB AGREEMENT
Consumer group Laban Konsyumer Inc. deserves better public service from the LTFRB after Uber left the Philippine market. Consumers should be given adequate reasonable time frame to enable them to adjust their time and resources and explore other ride sharing options amidst the sale of Uber to Grab. Consumers lost their right of choice in booking and riding, and correspondingly, availability of alternative services and rates.
Atty. Vic Dimagiba, President of Laban Konsyumer Inc. in a press statement, urges ?that LTFRB should stop meddling in the review of the Uber and Grab agreement by the Philippine Competition Commission or PCC. The Competition Act vests in the PCC the primary power to review and decide on the deal in accordance with the law. Let the PCC complete the review of the deal. Any public statement supporting the shutdown of Uber by LTFRB could undermine the PCC review processes?. No ?turf war please ?, added Dimagiba.
Dimagiba urges LTFRB to act now on pending applications that shall fill up the void left by Uber. LTFRB should inform consumers the ?track record ? of the new entrants , what services they offer, i.e. transport and/or delivery , the route, i.e. pick up and destination points, the number of vehicles , the rates, insurance and the technology they will use. Dimagiba pleads transparency in the LTFRB processes and that appropriate public hearings must be conducted.
Dimagiba added that Laban Konsyumer Inc. was informed on April 5, 2018 by Ms. Amanda Long, Executive Director, that it is now a member of the Consumers International (CI) after the March 29, 2018 CI Board meeting . Consumers International is the membership organization for consumer groups around the world. CI holds offices in Africa, Asia, Central Asia and Middle East, Europe, Latin America and Caribbean and North America. CI is now 58 years, consists of 200 plus member organizations, in 100 plus countries.
