LKI 2020-074 PRESS STATEMENT

CONSUMER GROUP WARNS AGAINST HIGHER INFLATION THIS MONTH

Consumer advocacy group Laban Konsyumer Inc. (LKI) warned against higher inflation this month considering the unabated increases in prices of basic necessities especially agricultural and marine products to the detriment of consumers.

Vic Dimagiba raised the alarm as a reaction to the 3.3 inflation in November where Neda, DOF and BSP blamed the typhoon and ASF disease as the drivers why food prices prices shoot up. This alarmed our group because we believe that given the pandemic, the recent string of typhoons and the destruction it caused, our Filipinos who were most affected are still recovering and price freeze on basic necessities are not enforced .

Dimagiba voiced out over a radio interview that “ I did not agree on the official statement on the reasons behind the food price increases. I said “Gintong baboy and Gintong manok prices “ are subject to all time high even prior to the state of calamity in Luzon islands. I added they failed to enforce the price freeze data set for agri products. Enforcement was feeble. December will continue with higher inflation as consumers buys more and the price freeze remain not complied.”

Dimagiba continued by saying “Sustain and honest to goodness freeze should include all the stakeholders in the supply chain. Otherwise consumers will continue to , as they did the past 2 weeks , to flock to Divisoria and Baclaran for cheaper goods, unless the Big Boys, or the major players in the industires drop prices.”

Related to this as well… In a electronic message thu Viber to the Department of Energy (DOE), LKI wrote on DECEMBER 2 , 2020 to USEC William FUENTEBELLA of the Department of Energy “Please be informed that based on news reports as well as the DOE website, the oil companies selling kerosene implemented an increase of Php 0.30 per liter in November 24 , 2020. For December 1, 2020 we observed that Petron and Seaoil implemented an increase of Php 1.10 per liter increases.”

Dimagiba explained that “Likewise for LPG we observed that Petron implemented an increase of Php 0.96 per kg for Household ( HH ) lpg and Php 0.54 for auto LPG. Solane deferred the increase to December 3 .2020. Upon investigation and finding of violation of Presidential Proclamation 1051, we pray that appropriate fines be imposed on the errant oil companies and rollback the prices of kerosene and LPG for such number of days of violation.”

Dimagiba concluded by emphasizing that LKI will “intervene as an Oppositor in ERC approval for P0.1881 per kilowatt hour Feed in Tariff Allowance ( FIT-ALL) as this is a threat for further higher inflation.
