PRESS STATEMENT

LABAN KONSYUMER HITS CONSISTENTLY HIGH RETAIL PRICES OF PORK AND CHICKEN

In a viber text   message today, January 18, 2020 to Usec Ariel Cayanan of the Department of Agriculture, Laban Konsyumer Inc. (LKI) hits the consistently high prevailing retail prices of pork and chicken Vis a Vis falling farm gate prices, waning African Swine Fever scare ,  as well as the Christmas season is over.

Farm gate prices of chicken per kilo as of January 17, 2020 stood at Php 81.00 for off size, Php 76.67 for regular size and Php. 77.44 for prime size.  On the hand. Pork farm gate prices per kilo in Central Luzon provinces stood at Php 90.00 to Php 100.00 and in Batangas, farm gate price is Php 80.00 to Php 100.00 a kilo.

Vic Dimagiba stated that the business permits of these traders and retailers should be cancelled. The consumer group is of the opinion that there is economic sabotage more than profiteering being committed by traders and retailers.

The Department of Agriculture had taken no action in imposing Suggested Retail Prices or SRPs of Php 140 for chicken and Php 160 for pork.

Dimagiba earlier proposed last year , saying local price coordinating councils of respective LGUs should intervene. He said the involvement of LGUs and LPCCs will be a more efficient way of addressing the current price situation of pork. Price cap requires a strengthened market monitoring and enforcement. Let us appeal to the price council as they may act promptly.

LKI has been pushing for the capping of pork prices since last year after observing that retail prices do not reflect the change in live weight prices caused by the outbreak of African swine fever in Luzon and farm gate prices.
