Sirs:
The Laban Konsyumer Inc. is a non stock and non profit consumer advocacy group organized under Philippine laws, is a recognized consumer organization of the Department of Trade and Industry and a full term member of the Consumers International .
This letter confirms in writing our media announcements urging the regulatory agencies to name the brand and owner of the contaminated processed meat products .
The legal basis of an informed consumers and the public disclosure is provided under the Food Safety Act, Republic Act 10661, and the implementing rules and regulations.
Under sections 8 on protection of consumer interests and section 11 (b ) on Transparency , the Act provides that “ in cases where it is suspected that food may pose a risk to human health, regulatory authorities shall take appropriate steps to inform the general public about the nature of the risk to health, the affected foods, types of food, and the necessary measure to prevent, reduce or eliminate the risk “ The same provisions of the Act are reiterated in the Implementing Rules and Regulations.
When appropriate and warranted , we also propose that the regulatory agencies initiate hearings , investigate and impose appropriate actions including recall of the adulterated and contaminated processed meat products.
